PC Forum 2005: Jerry Yang on China and the Internet

Yang said that he feels after 10 years we had finally hit critical mass. He talked about how you could not go into China based on principle or you could come into the market and participate in the change. He’s obviously referring to things like censorship and human rights, and I have to say I agree with him. Clearly, getting involved with China, bringing them into the text so to speak, will do more to improve the state of freedom, human rights, and even pragmatic business issues like intellectual property protection, then isolating them.

As Esther pushed him to point out something wrong in China Jerry had a long pause. He said he didn’t see it as Jerry vs. China. He talked about China’s top down approach to news, and said he could understand what they are doing right now in terms of dealing with the transition.
