An Interview with Yahoo re: RSS and search.

Some interesting tidbits from an interview with a Yahoo rep at a conference:

Two ways to get your site listed in Yahoo! (both require a Yahoo membership):

1- If you have an RSS link that you would like for Yahoo to crawl, you must become a Yahoo member and then add your own RSS link to http://my.yahoo.com This will cause your information and feed to show up on My Yahoo! and will also submit the feed to Yahoo! Search. Tim says this method is a great backdoor into the Yahoo! system.

2 – Tim mentioned Yahoo’s new Add URL program. Now, I was wondering: why have an add URL program in addition to paid inclusion? Tim said the add URL program is a free service to Yahoo! members. In my opinion, it’s brilliant – they’ll get lots of high-end members now. He said when other search engines have had free Add URL programs in the past it was “a highway to spam.”

“We want to use this as a way to deliver better, fresher content to searches,” Tim said. Of course, submitting your site is just suggesting your URL to Yahoo! and doesn’t guarantee your inclusion. Expect Yahoo to be picky about the sites it accepts. If you’re in a bad IT block or have the slightest whiff of “spam” Tim says you’ll be excluded.
