Dealing with Spyware and Windows XP: AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy

I install a ton of applications on my desktop and laptop, and I’m on the Internet all day long. It takes about three or four months before whatever machine I’m on start freaking out (at least Windows machines).

So, I’ve got two things I do on a regular basis now that I thought I would suggest if you’re like me and your an extreme user:

1. Run AdAware and SpyBot Search & Destroy on a regular basis. I’m amazed at how many little things get installed on my machine without me knowing. These two programs are amazing and cleaning up Windows.

2. Reinstall Windows on a quarterly basis. I know this sounds insane, but Windows XP is not a stable operating system. The easiest way to deal with this is to simply give up and reinstall. It is always amazing to me how much faster my machine is after I do this. Also, you don’t have to delete everything on your system, you just install windows and it writes over all your old Windows files. Now, you can screw up when installing Windows so I suggest you back up your data.

Anyway, just two hints on how to keep your system running well.
