YouTube: Ted Williams Records KRAFT Mac & Cheese Commercial

1/10/2011

The dynamics of this Ted Williams meme is stunning. From a homeless guy in a viral video to recording a national TV spot that airs a *week* later.

This guy is going to go from homeless to a millionaire in 30 days. Seriously, he's a moment away from becoming the voice of Volvo or David Letterman. Of course, I'm wondering what all this does for the 10%+ unemployment rate?

Are we going to celebrate the edge case or solve the core problem?

As a society we need to help *everyone* not just a Susan Boyle or Ted Williams every six months.

Sarah Palin says crosshairs on this poster have nothing to do with guns

1/10/2011

Sadly, when people said "Sarah Palin is dangerous" they were right.

If a person in power says stupid/dangerous things their idiot followers will magnify those messages–in some case with dangerous effects.

Exhibit One: Using assassination as a metaphor for winning (image attached).

Exhibit Two: "Sarah Palin blamed by the US Secret Service for death threats against Barack Obama – Telegraph http://jc.is/fdSupb "

POWERFUL: Someone colorized the pulitzer “burning monk” photo

The original is here: http://jc.is/hbNv6q

At first glance I thought this would be inappropriate, but after studying the photo I realized it serves mainly to make you consider the act even more deeply.

Wonder if a CGI of the event would do the same?

My favorite film of the year: CARLOS

See the long version of the film ONLY. Well over five hours and I wish
it was 20… perhaps one of the best performances captured on film.

It blew me away.

My latest idea: an *AUCTION* for 20+ ad slots on ThisWeekIn.com!

1/6/2011
We are building a ton of shows over at ThisWeekIn.com, and we’re doing it faster than we can actually sell the shows (i.e. two sales people doing 25 shows!).
So, I asked myself WWGD with all this inventory?
Well, what google would do is host an auction! Thanks to a nifty little plugin we found for WordPress we are hosting an auction to buy 20 slots across the network!
If this works well we might just auction off all the inventory each week.
Right now the top price if $52!

Here’s a sizzle reel of our host-read ads in action!

How Bidding Works:

When you bid, you’re bidding the *maximum* you would pay. If someone else has previously bid a higher amount than you, the system will automatically bid against you on behalf of the higher bidder already in the system — until you exceed their maximum bid, at which point, you become the new high bidder.

The system will notify everyone if YOU are the current high bidder, but it will not reveal to other participants how high you’re willing to go: that is concealed. The system will protect your first place status by automatically bidding against other participants until your maximum is exceeded (at which point you will be notified by email).

Note: The winner of this auction and specific shows and episodes of ad delivery shall be determined solely at the discretion of This Week In, Inc. We also reserve the right to reject ads that violate our broadcast policies (hate speech, etc.)

Hello, my name is Jason. Welcome to my blog on the interwebs. You can reach me on twitter @jason and by email at jason@calacanis.com. My Skype is jasoncalacanis, and my mobile phone is 310-456-4900.

I only pick up numbers I recognize, and in terms of emailing me, the best strategy is to write short, blunt and to the point requests. I can quickly respond to short messages, and many times I simply don't have the time to read five page pitches. In terms of taking meetings, I only do that after reviewing an actual product (not a business plan). So, the best time to ping me is when you have mockups or an alpha site. I don't read business plans, and I've never written one.
