Subject: Angel Groups charging to present
To: Jason Calacanis <jason at calacanis.com>

Jason,

An investor friend of mine sent me your blog post from Oct 2009 re angel groups charging for entrepreneurs to present.  I agree with your point that these groups should not charge us outrageous fees to present.  I’ve had experience with one of the forums mentioned in your blog.

I also thought you should be aware of a group called Landmark Angels based in Greenwich, CT run by William Podd.  He’s charging $3,750 (regularly $5K) for the following, looks like he’ll be out your way in CA this year:

“As you may know, Landmark Angels and Landmark Capital are hosting its Southeast Landmark Venture Forum on February 17th at the Ritz Carlton in Palm Beach.

We have expanded from a group of 30 accredited investors to well over 100 accredited investors on both coasts.  Some of our members include former principals of Lehman Brothers, Oracle, Yahoo, Sybase, MCI, HP, Microsoft and MCI.  We are actively working with over 40 affiliate angel groups with over 3,000 investors on a syndicated basis.

We have expanded our Venture Forums from Greenwich, CT to the West Coast and the Southeast.  In 2010 we have scheduled five Northeast Landmark Venture Forums in Greenwich, four Southeast Landmark Venture Forums in Palm Beach, Atlanta and Raleigh/Durham, and five West Coast Landmark Venture Forums in San Francisco and Los Angeles.  At each Venture Forum we select 6-7 companies to present across all major sectors.

We have a three person review committee selecting the “best of breed” deals from the best of highly qualified companies that have presented at major venture conferences.  Last year we drew the list from the top ten companies presenting at 40 venture conferences.  We want to give our investors a basket of the very best deals to invest in regardless of location.”

2/9/2010
  • A picture of a billboard featuring a picture of former President George W. Bush and the words "Miss Me Yet?" began circulating via e-mail on Monday, February 8, 2010. At first, many assumed that the billboard was a photoshopped image, however it was confirmed to be real and stands along I-35 near the town of Wyoming, in the state of Minnesota.

Bob Collins of Minnesota Public Radio confirmed seeing the billboard along I-35. The mayor of Wyoming, Sheldon Anderson, said he has received a lot inquiries over the Bush billboard but said he did not know who set up the billboard or who paid for it.5

  • "Miss Me Yet?" Themed Gifts, Mugs, Bumper Stickers and T-Shirts
As of February 8, 2010, the person or group who paid to set up the "Miss Me Yet" George Bush billboard remained anonymous. The "Miss Me Yet" meme has been popular on the Internet for quite some time. It is popular among some conservatives and Republicans and is often in the form of a website graphic that is shared on social networking sites. A commenter on TheRightPerspective.org blob states that a neighbor inTexas has a smaller version of the billboard as a yard sign. Zazzle.com, a website that allows users to create their own novelty items, features a variety of "Miss Me Yet" Bush items ranging from bumper stickerscoffee mugsT-shirts and mouse pads.7

Hello, my name is Jason. Welcome to my blog on the interwebs. You can reach me on twitter @jason and by email at jason@calacanis.com. My Skype is jasoncalacanis, and my mobile phone is 310-456-4900.

I only pick up numbers I recognize, and in terms of emailing me, the best strategy is to write short, blunt and to the point requests. I can quickly respond to short messages, and many times I simply don't have the time to read five page pitches. In terms of taking meetings, I only do that after reviewing an actual product (not a business plan). So, the best time to ping me is when you have mockups or an alpha site. I don't read business plans, and I've never written one.
